Chapter Five

Tomorrow we talk. Nerves skittered under Aislyn’s skin as she padded down the hall toward the kitchen the next morning. Those words had kept her from sleep last night, ruining the calming effects of that stress-relieving orgasm. She should either get up the nerve to talk to him or leave. In the few days she’d been here, she hadn’t come up with a solution to prove her innocence of Heath’s lies, and couldn’t think of a thing Gavin could do to help. The warrant would be waiting for her no matter how long she hid out here, and she fretted over bringing trouble to his doorstep after seeing a whole new side of him since arriving. His enjoyment of working the ranch, the close bond he shared with his brothers and ranch hands, the contentment he seemed to get from spending his days, and some nights roaming the outdoors, his affinity with those wolves last night. Had she made excuses for her procrastination so she could stay longer, because she couldn’t bear going back to missing him day and night? Gavin wasn’t waiting for her and the letdown of spotting the note beside the coffee pot answered her question. She had never gotten over him but had thought she could handle seeing him again, being with him again without letting herself wish for more. How wrong she was, she realized now.

Picking up the note, she read it with a sinking heart.

Late night cougar attack. I’ll be back once we’ve tracked it and taken it out. G

That was an unpleasant fact of ranch life that Aislyn never considered. Picturing delicate Lily being vulnerable to a wildcat assault prompted her to get going. Instead of calling Jim Bob, she hiked down to the stables and breathed easier when Lily greeted her with a head butt and soft whinny. Like Gavin, the foal had wrapped herself around her lonely heart as soon as Aislyn set eyes on her,
